About counselling

The official definition of counselling: a contracted meeting between a client and trained practitioner. The meeting happens at a set time, in an agreed place, for the sole benefit of the client to help them bring effective change or enhance their wellbeing (BACP, 2025).

Counselling provides an opportunity for you to explore personal issues with a qualified listener who is committed to promoting your wellbeing in a respectful and non-judgmental way by respecting your autonomy and privacy.

There are many different types of counselling. You can find more information at Types of counselling and psychotherapy.

What can you expect from your counsellor?

These are some examples which form the basis of our counselling service:

  • Feeling accepted, valued and listened to
  • Time to share your issues in a confidential space
  • Feeling supported when you are exploring how to make changes to how you think and feel
  • Exploring new strategies to help you manage your difficulties
  • Finding insight and acceptance of yourself, others and situations
  • Sharing information that might be helpful to you

Every person is different, and counsellors embrace their client’s individuality when offering tailor-made therapy depending on their qualifications and skills.

What counsellors don’t provide
